Students' Corner

The BFS plans to represent students’ interests here, on the Students’ Corner. All the articles are written by students, who present their perspective of the music scene. You will find articles as well as information on events, as well as video clips. We also hope to feature a Student of the Month interview.

About Mattew Lynch

Matthew began studying the flute with Jon Cherry before gaining a place at the Royal Northern College of Music Junior Department in Manchester to study with Helen Rimmer.  He has participated in classes with internationally renowned flautists such as Philippa Davies, Wissam Boustany, Peter Lloyd, and Yossi Arnheim and has studied with teachers in Israel and Australia.  He currently plays in the Vacations Chamber Orchestra along with several chamber groups and has played principal flute with the Oxford University Philharmonia.

Matthew began conducting with the Leicestershire Arts’ Flute Choir, performing his own composition, “Pursuits” and soon went on to conduct the Leicester Grammar School Orchestra in another of his compositions “Portraits”.  When he joined the Junior RNCM Matthew began studying with Matthew Wood (Associate Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra) and started conducting the Junior RNCM flute choir.  In September 2007 he was appointed assistant conductor to the Junior RNCM Chamber Orchestra.

Matthew is currently studying Music at St Hugh’s College, Oxford, where he has conducted the St Hugh’s College Orchestra, the Oxford String Ensemble and the Oxford Opera Society in a production of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas.  He is continuing his conducting studies with Neil Thomson and his flute studies with Kate Hill and Philippa Davies.
