BFS Flute Choir Corner

Welcome to the Flute Choir Corner. If you are interested in flute choirs we hope you will find this corner useful; this area will be updated regularly and you will be able to find articles, repertoire lists, tips on rehearsals, video clips of performances and pending events.

You are welcome to contribute to the "About Flute Choirs" section by sending me your comments in short articles. We look forward to building up a body of experience and knowledge to help us all. Here are some suggestions for issues to discuss:

  • What makes a player join one
  • Why do we have them
  • Are they different to Flute Bands
  • Where do they perform
  • How often do they meet
  • What kind of people run them and who joins
  • Why do players move around and change instrument
  • Are there similar arrangements for other instruments
  • What standard are they
  • What repertoire works well and under what circumstances
  • What repertoire gets audience excitement and approval
  • What works best - a conductor or a leader/player
  • What tricks have directors found for making the ensemble play together
  • What approaches do directors have for improving tuning and intonation
  • What special things make the performance good – clothing, stands, staging
  • How are rehearsals structured - warm up session, sight reading, technical discussions, analysing pieces …

Chris played the recorder in junior school and took up the flute at around 10 years old.  Then, after a considerable break, he started learning again as an adult and now gets great pleasure from playing C-flute and bass flute with friends and in ensembles.  In order to support flute playing for adults around his home town he established Dorking Flutes and is delighted that this provides an opportunity for many local flautists to try their skills in rehearsals and concerts, as well as a friendly social environment for like-minded people.  His other pastimes include sailing, building websites and meeting in local coffee bars.
