| 3 - 10 August 2008 | International Colourstrings/Colour Keys Course for Flute Teachers The International Colour Keys Intensive Course for Flute Teachers will be held at the East Helsinki Music Institute, Finland, from the 3rd to 10th August 2008. The Colourstrings/Colour Keys method is an instructional system for several musical instruments, based on Zoltan Kodály's philosophy of music education. The father of the Colourstrings method is Géza Szilvay, the internationally recognised Hungarian violin pedagogue. The philosophical basis for the method is the notion of the children's musical mother tongue, and of learning by playing. The method uses traditional folk music, children's songs and Tonic Sol-Fa as its starting point. Teacher at the summer course is Jaana Laasonen, author of the flute method. The idea of The Flute ABC is to teach not only flute playing but also complete musicianship in a form that children can easily grasp. The idea is to utilise all the senses and abilities at the same time: sight, through reading the coloured music notation (each scale has its own colour); hearing, through intonation and developing a sense of the structure of the music; motor coordination and mental comprehension. During the Colourstrings/Colour Keys seminar, the participants learn how the flute can be taught through games and purposeful exercises, using The Flute ABC as material. Attendants also learn how to use tonic Sol-Fa in flute teaching, how to teach intonation, the beginnings of improvisation, different breathing exercises, stretching hands and the whole body, ensemble playing etc. They also study the chamber music available for several flutes together in the light of the Colour Keys Method. |
